The versatile Gibson SG Special and the Gibson SG Special Faded offers both stunning features and value. The original SG broke the mold of what a guitar should be, and quickly became Gibson's most popular and best selling guitar. Gibson soon created a value oriented line called the gibson sg special which features uncovered 490t and 490b pickups. The 490b pickup is less active than the 498t normally found in the gibson sg standard, this creates a slightly mellower lead tone. Many guitarists prefer this tone to the normal SG sound and the gibson sg special has found its own cult following. Gibson in recent years has taken it one step further with the faded series which has a more rough and lesser finished stained mohagony body which saves on costs even further. The Gibson SG Special features a lightweight mahogany body, rosewood or ebony fretboard, dot inlays, and ‘50s rounded profile.
